What is Morbid Obesity and Why is it Such a Risk to Your Health?

The definition of morbid obesity states that an individual's weight is about 50 to 100% more than that of his or her ideal weight. The people whose weight is 100 pounds more than the correct weight are also called the morbidly obese people. Where the BMI value which is more than 30 for an adult is considered as obese, they are considered morbidly obese when it is more than 40. Morbid obesity is related to various other health problems and can lead to death. A survey states that about 9 million American people are suffering from morbid obesity.

Possible Causes

There are two types of reasons of morbid obesity. The genetic factor is often held responsible, this is also known as heredity which means that this disease has always been there in the family of an individual. But the family heredity cannot be solely responsible for a disease like this.

This is a very common thing that the members of the same family are used to with similar kind of life style and food habits. In fact the food habit and activity level has a great role to play in morbid obesity. The other cause of morbid obesity is the environmental factor.

When we talk about environment it can be the environment at school, at office, and home. The kind of food available in an individual's environment, the quantity of food taken by him in a day and the exercise habits of that person add up to give rise morbid obesity.

Then the psychological factors are also there which can cause morbid obesity. Severe depression, anxiety, trauma etc are included in these psychological factors.

Health Risks

Morbid obesity is labeled as the second most prominent reason of the death of people in United States. This is closely associated with the risk of other 30 diseases. First of all the morbidly obese people can loose their mobility and ability to accomplish the regular activities.

Apart from this they are often at the risk of coronary heart diseases which can lead to stroke. The blood pressure can become excessively high. The internal organs like liver get damaged with excess fat deposition. Osteoarthritis and grout are two problems related to the bones and joints which are caused by morbid obesity.

Then the gall bladder problems and diabetes is closely related to this. Respiratory trouble and sleep apnea can arise from this particular type of obesity. Women can suffer from gynecological disorder. Finally the patients can lead towards cancer.

The only treatment for morbid obesity is often surgery which is risky enough. So it is always advised to get conscious about the health before it leads to morbid obesity.

Say Goodbye To Obesity With Right Diet, Work Out and Biocare

The world is growing health concious. And the one problem that people have been dealing with for a long time now is - obesity. Obesity is simply unwanted and people from different age groups, nationality and ethnicity have tried various methods to shed weight. From joining health clubs to taking dietary supplements like Biocare, various people have tried various measures. This article is about obesity and how to fight it. First we will see why is obesity a curse and then how to combat this problem.

Obesity is bad because of two main reasons - one, obese people do not look good. No matter how well dressed you are or how beautiful your face is, irrespective of your skin complexion etc., if you are obese, you certainly do not look the real beautiful you. And the second reason why obesity should be avoided, is that it is the host to many other diseases and health problems. Some of the common problems that obesity welcomes are diabetes, high blood pressure, bone problems (especially in the legs, since they carry all the weight of the body), increased risks of heart problems etc.

Now we will focus on ways you can prevent obesity or if your obese, then how you can get back in shape. Apart from consumption of low calorie and low fat food, a great way to shed kilos and stay fit is regular work out. You should include some physical activity like swimming, cardiovascular, callisthenics, yoga or any kind of work out that burns fat.

Along with that, it is necessary to have certain dietary supplements like Biocare vitamin B complex. While B3 and B6 would provide fuel to the body cells, B6 together with zinc would help in digestion of food. The various B vitamins do not let food to get accumulated in the body in the form of fat and also help burn the existing fat.

John Hayden is a dabbler in dermatology and currently he is researching on various dietary supplements with nutriglow. He has decided to pen down his thoughts for BioCare and BioCare Vitamins and share them for the common benefit.

Obesity in Children and Adults is Becoming a Worldwide Problem

Obesity is a problem not only in America but all over the world. There is a new word for this called "Globesity," a global escalation of obesity. This is a growing epidemic around the world and millions will suffer from serious weight related diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) obesity is the biggest unrecognized health problem in the world. This is not a Western or wealthy nation problem anymore. Overweight and obesity is in many low and middle-income countries.

Childhood obesity is an ever-growing problem in countries such as Africa, Egypt, Zambia, Morocco, Chile, Peru and Mexico. WHO estimated in 2004 that 1 in 10 school children world-wide are overweight. Type two diabetes was unheard of in children 20 years ago, but is a common problem now. In some parts of Africa fatness and obesity afflicts more children than malnutrition. AIDS, commonly know as "the slims disease," is causing an unusual backlash there. People seek to put on weight to demonstrate that they do not have AIDS. Most of the cause for obesity in children is inactivity and poor diet in schools.

People are living less active lifestyles by moving from farms to the city. They are not educated enough about nutrition and the body and continue to eat more calories than the body can burn off. The extra calories are then stored in the form of fat on a person. Also the types of foods that are eaten can contribute to obesity and overweight.

Obesity and overweight can lead to many diseases. It's not just an appearance problem. Being overweight or obese is unhealthy. It can lead to diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, osteoarthritis, gallbladder disease, fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, depression and low self-esteem.

It is never too late to do something about obesity. Simply cut portions down, change from eating junk food, refined flours and processed foods to fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain breads, cut the use of butter, margarine and oil down to a minimum. Start doing some exercise even if it's 15 minutes a day a few days a week. When at home do some exercises on the floor to tone up those muscles.

Why Does Adolescent Obesity Create Social Anxieties?

Obesity among the youth is now more prevalent than ever. There are approximately 30.4% overweight adolescents and 15.5% obese adolescents in the United States. We are aware of the string of diseases that could develop or worsen as obesity continues on to adulthood. But do we understand the impact obesity creates? Is an obese adolescent comfortable with himself in a social setting? Does adolescent obesity create social anxieties?

It’s a harsh world we live in. Whether the real world begins a step out the door or the moment slumber leaves escapes you, you view of it would be different from another. In order to live in harmony with, society has created standards in common agreement with the general population. This created the public view of obesity and the regard for it is hardly appreciative. Adolescent obesity automatically receives a negative reaction from society because of the preference for the slim and lean. Many are still subject to verbal abuse. Adolescent females, for instance receive derogatory names and the unending comments about their appearance from peers, family and strangers. There are also those who are subject to bullying or the other way around. Because of the social response for obesity, obese teenagers have the tendency to withdraw. Does adolescent obesity create social anxieties?

Adolescent obesity then creates social anxieties. It’s an age-old issue of acceptance and belonging. Social anxieties for an adolescent are brought upon by the conditions of an adolescent’s environment the development of social anxieties may not originate from home. Some develop the fear from traumatic interactions with non-obese adolescents. The degree of trauma varies but the fear develops nonetheless. Here is where adolescent obesity create social anxieties. The world is different to people. A slim and healthy teen may have his/her peers’ admiration. He/she is able to do more such as sports granted by the blessing of a fit body. The confidence builds as skills and a healthy mentality develops. The case is different for an obese teen. The less they participate due to their weight, the less they feel about themselves. Some are afraid and limit themselves to a certain comfortable peer group whom have already accepted their condition and are not bothered by it. They create boundaries in order to protect themselves from whatever danger a social interaction can bring to an obese adolescent.

Taking a look at adolescent obesity creating social anxieties, we can conclude that social anxieties are formed as a defense mechanism. Then why does adolescent obesity create social anxieties? The answer, self-preservation. The world is still about survival of the fittest. An obese adolescent may find himself/herself at odds with world allowing social anxieties to creep in and take over. This explains why does adolescent obesity create social anxieties.

Linking Obesity and Diabetes

In an era of increasing rates of obesity and diabetes, just about everyone knows that one of the leading risk factors for diabetes is obesity. But many of us don't know why this is the case.

In simple terms obesity is linked to an increased risk of diabetes because as we gain weight we become ore resistant to the insulin we produce. In fact, as we lose weight we regain much of our lost insulin sensitivity. Our bodies start functioning better overall.

The link between diabetes and obesity then must have something to do with weight. What do people with a lot of weight typically have more of than people without a lot of weight? Primarily, obese people have more fat. So it is likely that the link between obesity and diabetes is found in the fatty tissue.

Primary Suspect: the Fat Compound Known as Resistin

The possible link between fat and diabetes was first noted as resistin in the January 2001 issue of "Nature." It was discovered that resistin in the fat cells acts as a hormone which makes the body resistant to the insulin it produces. An interesting follow up by scientists was the development of the drug Rosiglitazone, which suppresses the resistin.

One of the reasons scientists are relatively sure that resistin in the fat is an important part of the development of diabetes in obese people is that when scientists injected resistin into mice they suddenly became insulin resistant mice. When the mice were given antibodies that attacked the resistin, they became much less resistant to their own insulin.

More Research on Resistin is Needed

As promising as this research is, it doesn't say exactly if and how the resistin works, only that an increase in resistin is correlated to an increase in insulin resistance. More importantly, resistin hasn't even been found in human fat cells. The idea is that humans must have a similar hormone to resistin that takes the same sort of action. But that is speculation without any answers as of now. What we do know, is that obesity is strongly linked to diabetes and that obesity consists of increased amounts of fat.

What Is Obesity?

The term obesity gets thrown about a lot these days, does anyone actually know what it really means? Many people think that it just means that you don't look perfect, however that's not all it means. Obesity is more apparent in our society's today than it was 10 years ago. Obesity can be considered as a disease which is affecting people in every country all around the world.

Obesity simply means overweight. You have too much fat, and so are not considered normal. Due to this excess weight extra pressure is put onto bones and joints. These joints have to carry much more weight than they are designed to. This can result in arthritis. Excess weight also means that people often become lazier, which means they find it even easier to put more weight on.

This reduced activity and high amount of fat and cholesterol in your body can put too much pressure on your heart. This can cause high blood pressure, strokes, and numerous other heart conditions. Obesity can also be a cause of sleep apnea.

Obesity is perfectly curable, it just takes willpower, and effort. There are new products aimed at ridding you of obesity coming onto the market every day. Have a chat with your doctor to see what he suggests.

Am i obese?

Obesity has an official definition of anyone that has a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or higher. This body mass index is the weight of a person related to that persons height. This shows how much fat is stored within your own body. Think about when you buy a pack of biscuits that are 50g, they tell you the nutritional contents in 100g so you can compare. It's exactly like that, we are all different sizes and so scaling down to the height allows people to easily compare.

Scientists have started to warn about the dangers of having a lot of fat stored around waist. If men go above size 40, and women above 35 it is an early warning sign for lots of trouble.

Considerations of Childhood Obesity

Imagine being 7 years old with the arteries of a 40 or 50 year old. Sufferers of childhood obesity or problems with cholesterol exhibit these same results. New Orleans is the stage for a study that was presented to the American Heart Association at their conference.

The study goes on to say that the artery walls in these obese children have the same consistency as a person who is 45. It appears that the epidemic of childhood obesity is going to lead to early onslaught of cardiac problems. This particular set of circumstances means that now heart disease would become a pediatric issue.

16 percent of kids in the U. S. are considered obese. This is leading to more cardiac events e.g. heart attacks and strokes, and more incidents of Type 2 Diabetes than ever before. A computer model was made in December of 2007 and it found that at the present rate of obesity in children, that by 2035, the number of incidents of heart disease will increase by one hundred thousand cases. This is really quite a statement if you consider the way cardiac care has improved recently.

It is however thought that childhood obesity can be reversed. Plaque in the arteries hasn't had the chance to harden so there may be a chance they can be eradicated from the blood system.

Children who are obese should have their blood pressure and blood work done on a regular basis. If the child is obese, has high cholesterol levels or has a family history of heart problems.

Pediatricians will also treat childhood obesity with medication but only after most avenues for change have failed to produce results.

What Causes the Lost Weight to Come Back?

Why is obesity such a serious problem in the modern society? It is because obesity is on a rapid rise, almost an exponential rise even. Another reason is because obesity is a life-long problem and may happen to anyone at any age regardless of gender and race. Even those people who have successfully combated obesity may regain weight in subsequent years.

Therefore the key factors in combating obesity is not only effective weight loss but also effective long-term ideal weight maintenance. Let us analyse what causes the lost weight to come back and how to avoid such incidences.

One of the main reasons why lost weight come back is because of improper weight loss regimes. In particular this kind of incidences usually happen to overweight individuals who restricted food intake to lose weight. When they restrict food intake and do not exercise, their body metabolism will slowly adapt to amount of food intake and become lower. Thus even if they maintain small amount of food intake, the calories level may be excessive for their low metabolism rates, resulting in fat accumulation.

Another reason why lost weight come back is because of lack of motivation and persistence in the weight loss program. Once overweight individuals see a little weight reduction, they begin to reduce amount of exercise and go back to the same amount of food before the weight loss program. This is counter-productive, not only will the lost weight come back, they may even gain more weight than before if they do not closely monitor their weight and change their attitudes promptly.

Quick and Sustained weight loss is a combination of external and internal factors. The external factors of exercise and diet are of course helpful to lose weight. But you need to equally focus on internal factors of boosting your metabolism and keep yourself motivated to loose weight.

We have a secret recipe to help you keep your metabolism and motivation high. And what more it's 100% FREE.

To know more click Here http://www.healthyfatloss.org to get started! on a Free trail.

Let us understand what Metabolism implies. Your body is always burning calories, whether you walk, run or even sleep. The rate at which your body burns the calories is the metabolism rate for your body. Most of the weight loss products available in the market use hunger suppressants as a way to loss weight. But the problem with this is that as soon as you reduce your intake your body reduces the rate at which the calories are burnt. So effectively the lost weight is nothing but water, which comes back with vengeance.

What is required is to naturally increase the metabolism rate for sustained and effective weight loss. And this is exactly what we intend to do...

Women Obesity and Pregnancy Complications

According to the Public Affairs Committee there is a correlation between women obesity and pregnancy complications. The report suggests that women having a body mass index (BMI) greater than 30 have, compared to normal weight women, double the risk of having an affected child.

This relation remains unclear because of limited available data. But statistics show that obese and overweight women face during pregnancy an increased risk of gestational diabetes, hypertension and thromboembolic events. At the same time they are more likely to need a cesarean surgery.

In addition, the babes of obese mothers have higher chances to start their life in neonatal intensive care units and have a higher incidence of neural tube troubles.

Because childhood obesity is a major social concern, the Public Affair Committee consider that prevention of this condition must begin with prevention of obesity during the reproductive years. By consequence, the report suggests to avoid obese or overweight conditions during the pregnancy. Because during the pregnancy an adequate nutrition is recommended for women, the weight loss efforts must be made before conception. During the pregnancy women should receive a appropriate education about the right caloric intake and exercise.

The last recommendation of Public Affairs Committee says that all parents should be educated to pay a special attention of breastfeeding and proper childhood nutrition as a protective approach against childhood obesity.

Female Body Mass Index

The body mass index is the brainchild of a Belgian statistician and mathematician named Adolphe Quatelet, and was developed between 1830 and 1850.

A person’s body mass index (BMI) is the relationship between their height and weight, which directly correlates to the body fat contained within the body and explains the degree of health risk associated with the of the person. It is measured as BMI = Body weight in Kilograms/ height in meters squared.

The BMI values for women seem to be falling on the initial spectrum of the normal adult Body Mass Index, which should be somewhere in between 20 – 22. While the desirable body mass is about 21-23, obesity, which is at least 20% above the desirable range, can be assumed to begin at 27.5 and extreme obesity can be marked at 31.5 for women.

For women, their weight to height ratio could play an important role in trying to assess their health characteristics. Dividing one’s waist size by one’s height derives the weight-to-height ratio. If you are wondering what some seemingly perfect weight-to-height ratios might be like, a Barbie doll has a WHR of 25 % while some college female swimmers might have a WHR of 42.4%.

Being healthy is one of most primary concerns and American women today are in a constant fight against obesity. Coupled with the increasing costs of healthcare and medicine, the harmful effects of obesity inevitably lead to otherwise avoidable complications. The BMI is surely a useful guide for these women.

Body Mass Index provides detailed information about body mass index, body mass index definition, body mass index for teens, and more. Body Mass Index is affiliated with Creatine Monohydrate.

The Epidemic of Obesity

One of the most serious problems dieticians have to encounter is that of obesity. According to the American Obesity Association (AOA), social structure, general and regional trends, socioeconomic transitions, as well as modernization and urbanization are the primary causes that led to the recent increase in obesity rates. The prevalence of overweight people is reported worldwide, both in developing and developed countries. Recent changes in consumption, culture, economic development and lifestyle have increased the problem of obesity, both in children and adults. Thus, it is of vital importance for people all around the globe to understand the risks associated with being obese and direct their efforts in reducing this alarming trend that is spreading.

The USA obesity rates have reached epidemic proportions and the numbers are socking. As recent statistical data indicate, 58 million people are overweight, 40 million obese and 3 million morbidly obese. These numbers are further supported by the fact that 8 out of 10 people over 25 years of age are overweight. Moreover, 78 percent of Americans do not meet the basic activity level recommendations. Even more alarming are the results that indicate a 76 percent increase since 1990 in Type II diabetes in adults belonging to the 30 to 40 age group.

Consequently, a variety of diseases and health problems appear to be directly related to the obesity trend monitored. As the scientific reports land on the physicians' desks, it is reported that 80 percent of Type II diabetes has to do with the increased levels of obesity in adults, 70 percent of cardiovascular disease is caused by poor eating habits, 42 percent of breast and colon cancers diagnosed belongs to obese individuals, 26 percent of high blood pressure is caused by the excess weight a person carries and 30 percent of gall bladder surgery is performed on a person that suffers from serious obesity problems. Moreover, obesity is also a risk factor in higher rates of certain types of cancer as well as fatty liver disease, vascular disorders, thrombosis, obstructive sleep apnea, musculoskeletal problems and gastro-esophageal reflux. Abdominal obesity is particularly associated with insulin resistance syndrome and cardiovascular disease.

If the numbers above have alarmed you enough to go and weigh out yourself, try to remember that suffering from obesity should not be something you should be ashamed of. You need support and guidance to change your eating and exercise habits, but most importantly you need to maintain your motivation. Eating smaller quantities is not enough. You have to eat right and keep yourself alert of the severe consequences related with poor nutrition and low exercise levels.

The Connection Between Child Obesity And Fitness

Our modern society is one that is, unfortunately, plagued by weight issues. Our poor diets fueled by convenience foods and our sedentary lifestyle exacerbated by computers and televisions, have spawned a culture that battles obesity more than ever. It should be no surprise, therefore, that our children are fighting similar battles. Childhood obesity continues to be one of the most dangerous conditions facing children today. A childhood spent battling weight is often a predicator of an adulthood spent battling weight. That’s why it’s so important to face child obesity head on, implementing lifestyle changes that can have a profound impact on future health. Obviously diet is a large component of child obesity. But the connection between child obesity and fitness is just as strong.

Poor choices in food along with a skewed concept of appropriate portions can undoubtedly fuel child obesity. Clearly, part of making lifestyle changes with children who are battling obesity involves critical diet modifications. This includes minimizing highly processed foods that often contain large amounts of saturated fat, sugar, and salt. Rather, there should be a transition to a diet focused on whole, natural foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats. High sugar juices and soft drinks should be immediately eliminated and replaced with water or low-fat milk.

But just as important is the link between child obesity and fitness. In this modern world, children are often more inclined to play on their computer and watch television than play outside. It is absolutely essential to integrate physical activity into a daily routine. Part of laying the groundwork for a healthy adulthood is instilling healthy habits in the lives of children.

Child obesity and fitness is just one component in the quest to get healthy. An overall lifestyle change that will mean a future spent at a healthy weight requires a fundamental commitment on all levels – in diet, exercise, and emotional dedication. The good news is that if you create a healthy connection between child obesity and fitness – in that an increase in physical activity has the child experiencing positive physical changes – you will forever instill that connection in them. The result can be a lifetime of health and vitality.

Obesity And Sleeping Disorder

Obesity is a big cause of concern as it’s often related to hordes of diseases. According to research findings, it has been observed that obesity can lead to the sleeping disorder called insomnia and likewise insomnia can lead to obesity. It has also been observed that poor sleep might boost hunger and affect the body's metabolism and the ability to lose weight or maintain weight loss.

Sleep loss itself is directly linked with weight gain. People who lack sleep develop increased cortisol, the stress hormone, and increased insulin resistance, which is called a prediabetic condition. This situation makes it harder for them to lose weight. People suffering from obesity generally remain in poor health and suffer from heart palpitations, high blood pressure and many number of ailments that can keep a person from getting a normal nights sleep.

So it’s our prime concern to get rid off this dreaded ailment. There are various means of eradicating obesity from our lives such as diet pills, dieting, exercise, diet plans and weight loss surgeries. Diet pills such as phentermine, Adipex and Xenical are considered as one of the most effective drug for weight loss in our times. These breed of drugs are easy to use and incur few side effects. These anti-obesity pills are prescribed to people who cannot lose weight through conventional means such as regular exercise and typical diet programs.

Apart from these prescription medications, herbal slimming pills, different form of exercise such as cycling, walking, swimming and aerobics can also make weight loss a reality for you. For attaining maximum benefits from weight loss, you need to complement it with a proper diet and healthy lifestyle. But in case of people suffering from morbid obesity, weight loss surgery is the only means of getting rid off obesity as the other methods of weight loss are not successful for them altogether.

So, make use of the above mentioned weight loss techniques to lead an obesity free life.

BMI: A Measure of Obesity?

Since awareness of the dangers of obesity became widespread, many strategies have emerged to counteract the condition. However, there was no concrete basis that determines if a person is in fact obese or not. People back then assumed that extreme fatness is obesity.

This changed in 1996 when a Belgian statistician and anthropometrist Adolphe Quetelet developed the Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI estimates the amount of body fat in order to determine obesity and its severity much like a thermometer measuring the degree of temperature. To calculate BMI, a subject’s weight (in Kilograms) is divided by the square of the subject’s height (in meters) as shown in the equation: BMI=kg/m2. the resulting value is then compared to an index of numbers that defines being underweight with a BMI of less than 18.5, normal at a BMI range of 18.8 to 24.9, overweight at a BMI range of 25.0 to 29.8, obese at a BMI range of 30 to 39.9 and morbidly obese at BMI of 40.0 or higher. These definitions were agreed upon and published in the year 2000. Since its release, it has been relied on to determine a specific status of obesity and related risks.

Although BMI and obesity were meant to go hand in hand, BMI cannot be a sole factor in determining obesity and in prediction a person’s cardiovascular health. In the calculation, we assume that the BMI results is body fat neglecting the type of body mass a person has. The type of body mass would be different for a muscular person and in an aging person who have lost body mass. BMI is, in fact, only one of the clinical assessments used to determine heart risks. Also, BMI does not consider the ratio between fat and muscle tissue nor does it recognize the forms of fat and waist circumference.

BMI, it seems have been quite a assistance to obesity. Despite the inaccuracy of the number, many continue to rely on this that it is used to identify persons with a certain BMI count a corresponding risk to another disease. Or even as an indicator of weight loss instead of measuring weight.

Naturally BMI cannot answer all questions regarding obesity and its health risks. It has limited coverage, obviously. Therefore it can only be a determining factor of obesity in general. It is as reliable as weighing yourself but in obvious cases of being overweight.

Virus Causing Obesity Among Us

The obesity that makes so much trouble for people across the whole world may be caused by a common virus, according to recent studies. So far, experts proved that obesity may be caused by overeating, the lack of physical exercise, genetic factors, certain medications, and high-fat food consumption.

The study`s results showed that a common virus, called human adenovirus-36 (Ad-36), that leads to respiratory and eye infections in humans, is also responsible for turning adult stem cells into fat cells. The laboratory experiments proved that stem cells that did not interacted with the virus didn`t turned into fat.

This does not mean that the Ad-36 virus is the only factor that leads to obesity, according to Dr. Magdalena Pasarica at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Louisiana. However, the results offer strong evidence that viral infections may sometimes lead to obesity, said Pasarica.

Researchers took adult stem cells from patients who suffered undergone liposuction and exposed half of them to the virus, while the other half remained unexposed. After a week, the cells exposed to the Ad-36 virus had transformed into fat cells, while the unexposed half remained intact.

A previous study showed that almost thirty percent of obese people are also infected with Ad-36, while only eleven percent of normal-weight people carry this virus.

Future research is needed in order to find out extra information regarding the Ad-36 virus. Researchers believe that obesity may be also caused by other viruses with similar effects.

The Global Results Of Child Obesity Surveys

Obesity in children, if not addressed immediately, can have serious effects on the population. Child obesity has a high likelihood of progressing even during the adult years, which heightens the risk of getting asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease later in life. In the United States, for example, about 15% of children are obese, and the stats don't seem to decrease per age group. It was also recently reported that an estimated 70% of obese children will tend to remain obese as they grow up.

As it is already understood, obesity in children is not only a concern for the United States, but in other nations as well. As a matter of fact, child obesity surveys are constantly underway to help monitor the incidence of the disease, and to determine if policies are effective in the attempt to remedy the problem. Below are some summaries of statistical findings from child obesity surveys by research groups, medical offices, and agencies in the US, United Kingdom, and Canada.

In 2003, the Kaiser Family Foundation conducted a survey among residents of San Francisco, particularly parents of school-aged children, to determine factors that lead to child obesity. Results from this study showed that about 69% of adults believe obesity in children is a major problem. However, when asked to rank the serious issues that afflict kids and teens today, drugs, alcohol, and violence are more cause for worry than obesity. From this study, a huge percentage of the parents (more than 80%) claim that the lack of regular exercise is the reason why a lot of kids and teens become obese. Following that choice, fast food restaurants and junk food intake are big causes for child obesity in their area.

Statistique Canada also conducted child obesity surveys, and a notable paper determining changes in prevalence rates in obesity over the past quarter of a century was written in 2004. From this study, it was estimated that more than half a million kids aged two to seventeen are obese. This represents about 8 to 9% of the age group in the population. Furthermore, the use of computers, video games, and excessive TV watching caused a rise in obesity rates from the aged six to seventeen group. It was found that about 40% of kids admit to eating fruits and vegetables everyday, which provides hope in encouraging a lot more to choose healthier meals.

In the United Kingdom, similar efforts were done to monitor the changes in child obesity rates over the years. A 2005 paper which was published by the National Centre for Social Research explains that over the past eight to ten years, obesity rates in various ages groups went up in the UK. Obesity among children of age two to ten, increased from about 10% in the year 1995 to more than 13% in 2003. It was also found by the child obesity survey that about 20% of children who live with obese or overweight parents have a tendency to become obese as well.

Teen Obesity

Obesity is not a condition where an individual is simply eating too much. Obesity is now acknowledged as a grave disease that is chronic. It is prevalent in all regions of the world without any race, gender, or ethnicity bias. However, it is seen to be more widespread in developed countries; in the United States, it has assumed alarming proportions. It is saddening to note that there has also been a rise in case of teen obesity in the country.

In just two decades, the percent of obese teens has almost tripled. Almost fifteen percent more teens border between being overweight and obese. Obesity is found to be a common eating disorder in teenagers and adolescents, as they generally do not follow a proper eating schedule and prefer ready-made food to the home cooked healthier food.

Manifestation of health problems due to obesity is lesser in teens than in adults. However, overweight teens are at high risk of becoming overweight adults. Hence, it is important to nip the problem in the bud itself and ensure that steps are taken to lessen obesity, and make them slimmer and healthier.

Obesity in teens is found to result in weakening of their physical health, making them lethargic and restricted to indoor activities. It also leads to social disability, loneliness, and unhappiness. They are generally found to be without friends and find it difficult to make new associations. Weight problem typically weighs at the back of their mind, which makes them introverts. This makes the teen stressed and leads to severe complications such as stress and mental illness. Studies have shown that obese teens are prone to physical bullying as both victims and perpetrators, which could lead to serious mental complications in adult life.

It is important for teenagers to develop a personal identity and positive body image. Hence, it is advisable to talk to trusted adults for working out a schedule to reduce excess weight.

Do You Want A Weight Loss Program That Actually Works!

Are you wanting to lose weight?

Here are some known facts about Obesity:

Obesity is more than an aesthetic problem or an issue of a few extra pounds here or there. Obesity is an epidemic in our western world that shows no signs of fading away; in fact, the situation continues to worsen. Soon, obesity will pass tobacco as the leading cause of preventable deaths.

"Overweight and obesity may soon cause as much preventable disease and death as cigarette smoking," said David Satcher, the U.S. Surgeon General. "People tend to think of overweight and obesity as strictly a personal matter, but there is much that communities can and should do to address these problems."

Obesity is defined as having a Body Mass Index (BMI) level of greater than 30. Incredibly, an estimated 300,000 U.S. deaths each year are associated in some way with obesity and overweight. Cost-wise, the price is steep as well: the total direct and indirect costs attributed to overweight and obesity were $117 billion in the year 2000.

Our Healthpointe Weight Loss Program can help and is simply living up to its name, i.e. WEIGHT LOSS! In fact, when I was introduced to the program by two leading Australian Personal Fitness Trainers, I wanted to see the results before I started to promote it. She is achieving great results!

I am a Personal Fitness Trainer with over 15 years experience in fitness training and I have not seen such great results from people using the Healthpointe Weight Loss Program.

As an introductory offer, I actually do not make any money out of this program because, although this program has a proven track record with other Personal Fitness Trainers, I want to see results with new clients that I myself come across. Tackling Obesity - A Slow & Steady Pace

Obesity has become one of the most important health problems in the United States. The number of obese people is increasing rapidly and its rising limits are unpredictable. Obesity is responsible for a number of the most common medical ailments and must be considered a disease. Heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke and few types of cancer are just some of the serious health problems associated with obesity.

Obesity is the condition where an excess amount of fat is deposited in body. One may be overweight with muscle, bone or water deposition, without being obese. A certain amount of fat is required by everyone for stored energy and heat resistance. Women with more than 30 percent body fat and men with more than 25 percent body fat are considered obese. Women generally deposit fat in their hips and waist while men usually build up fat around their abdomen. Deposition of fat around the abdomen, defined as upper body obesity, is linked to higher cardiovascular risk than the deposition of fat in the hips which is called lower body obesity. Increased mortality is associated with the extent of obesity and with its duration.

Obesity is caused by an excess of energy consumption (eating) over energy expenditure (physical activity). Some of the contributing factors to obesity are genetics, overeating, decreased physical activity and/or defective fat metabolism. Overeating is a leading contributor to obesity. Americans tend to eat foods rich in fat and most do not get enough physical activity to burn the extra fat. Some people eat in response to psychological conditions such as depression, grief or rage. The treatment of obesity includes diet adjustment, physical activity or both. The prime methodology to control obesity involves behavior modification related to diet and exercise. The behavior changes to control weight must be life-long changes.

Body weight can be used to track weight loss. Abdominal fat loss can be estimated by measuring waist circumference. Dietary fat and dietary carbohydrates should be lessened to reduce calorie intake. Moderate levels of physical activity for 30 to 45 minutes, 3 to 5 days a week is highly recommended. A targeted weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds per week over a period of six months should be the main strategy. A permanent weight loss and/or maintenance program should be adopted life-long after the initial six months of weight loss.

Health, Diabetes and Obesity

Globesity(obesity worldwide) is a serious problem. A few months ago in Australia an Obesity Summit was held in Sydney which stated that obesity is now the biggest public health hurdle of the century. At the same time Coca-Cola hosted a breakfast in Sydney where scientists from around the world spoke about the role of sugar in a balanced diet. Dr.Foreyt, chaperoned by Coca-Cola company representatives, says soft drinks have copped too much criticism in the war on fat, saying that the soft drinks have been demonized. The escalating consumption of high-sugar, high-energy soft drinks have been a hot topic in the world of obesity research and particularly regarding the spread of weight gain amongst teenagers. Dr Foreyt said that it is not one thing that has caused the problem, it is a multitude of factors contributing to obesity.

I agree with Dr. Foreyt but I feel that soft drinks are part of the problem and should be used in moderation, once every now and then not once every hour of the day. I also find it frustrating to see Coca Cola as part of the sponsorship behind the Obesity Summit, be it obscure or not. There are more than 1.5 billion adults and 10 percent of the children in the world who are now overweight or obese. They are now calling this phenomenon "Globesity". Obesity is the driving force behind diabetes type 2, in the last 20 years diabetes has increased 300% in this country alone. It is the fourth biggest killer in Australia.

The Obesity Summit conclusions were not what I expected. Food was not the focus but rather the developing urban social problems. New developments, lack proper attention to sidewalks, bike paths and public transport. They concluded that local, state and federal governments should commit to optimizing opportunities for exercise in a safe environment that we need a politically driven coordinated approach in health, finance, education, sports and agriculture, reversing the underlying causes of the obesity epidemic.

So where do I stand on this topic? Exactly where I've always stood. It's not up to anyone else but the individual to become informed. To be informed about the fat you eat, the sugar you eat, the additives you eat. Know that trans fats are the worst fat you can eat and it is disguised in foods as follows; margarine, hydrogenated vegetable oil, partially hydrogenated vegetable oil, vegetable oil. Read your food labels and keep this food out of your diet as much as possible. The additive MSG number 621 is an addictive substance that gives the statement "bet you can't stop at one" new meaning. Many foods on the grocery shelves have this number and you won't be able to stop at one. Sugar - go to the best you can eat, rapadura sugar is the best on the market. Go back and read Changing Habits Changing Lives ( http://www.changinghabits.com.au) and start getting back to being informed about food and make healthier choices. Just like global warming, the things you do now will decide whether we still have a planet to live on, and just like your health, the things you do now will decide whether or not you have a body to live in. Make a stand and don't be cajoled by powerful food companies that are not about truth but more about profit.

Diet, Exercise, Obesity, and Diabetes

Obesity has been a world wide problem, even as a silent epidemic in developed countries. Diabetes on the other hand has been one of the most difficult to treat human diseases. Put the two together and you have an endemic that would test the limits of science in saving lives – the peril of obesity and diabetes.

Although not all diabetes are a result of obesity (and not all diabetics are/become obese), more and more studies have been developed to prove the increase in the percentage of diabetes disease as a result of excessive weight gain. As one of the crucial consequence of obesity, diabetes is the final detriment in the life expectancy of an obese person. How so?

Obese fat accumulations damage the cells in the body that produces insulin. Obesity and diabetes is a fatal cause and effect that also moves in a vicious circle. The already diabetic person would put a final tip in his health balance once he gains excessive weight. At the same time, the obese person would cut more inches from his life thread once he reaches the point of diabetes.

Clinically obese patients, once diagnosed are also already pronounced ‘pre- diabetic’, having blood sugar levels higher than normal, and if left untreated, obese patients would develop the full- blown Type 2 Diabetes in only within a decade. Yet the obese- diabetic should stop counting his years.

Studies made on obesity and diabetes produce promising results of treatment. And the cure is just as good as hitting two birds with one stone – weight loss. It appears that losing weight doesn’t only prevent escalating obesity up to the morbid diabetes stage, but it also actually reverses the damaging cause of obesity to the cells that produce insulin. Obesity and diabetes are treatable; and starting the challenge is fairly simple – targeting the cause.

In dealing with obesity and diabetes, the most important concern is the amount of weight gain that takes to develop obesity and diabetes?’ –The key then is to determine the causes of weight gain and then reverse it. Soon enough, we’ll find out that the successful combination of diet and exercise to be the most likely answers to beat the worst human disease combination. Diet and exercise negates obesity and diabetes.

Attention to diet should start even from a very young age. In particular, obesity and diabetes prone (or generally health concerned) individuals should concentrate on serving sizes, required dietary allowances, and avoiding excessive sweet and fatty foods; the myriad benefits of exercise could not at all be overstated. – The key however, in getting the equation right is starting and starting now.

Lap Band Obesity Surgery – Safest Surgeries for Weight Loss

Lap-band adjustable gastric banding is the latest entrant that’s been approved by the FDA in 2001 in the sphere of surgical treatment for morbid obesity.

Gastric Lap Band obesity surgery is a non-permanent weight loss treatment that has become a popular option for people suffering from clinically severe obesity. Lap Band also called gastric banding, involves creating a smaller stomach chamber. Unlike gastric bypass, Lap Band obesity surgery is easily reversible, a distinct advantage for prospective patients concerned about the possible side effects of bariatric surgery. The good thing about Lap Band® obesity surgery is that it does not involve any cutting or stapling of the stomach. In addition, it can be adjusted to the patient’s need after surgery without any operation. For patients requiring more nutrition, like pregnant women, they can have their bands loosened. For patients who are not adequately benefitting can have their gastric bands tightened. Lap Band obesity surgery is the only adjustable surgical treatment available in the United States as of now.

The device used in Lap Band obesity surgery is made out of Silastic®, a type of plastic that does not react with internal body tissues. An inflatable tube is located inside the Lap Band®; when inflated with an injection of saline solution, the tube provides adjustable gastric banding. The reservoir used for injecting solution is implanted under the skin during gastric Lap Band obesity surgery. A bariatric surgeon can adjust the Lap Band® tube at a later date by injecting or removing saline solution.

As with any medical procedure, Lap Band obesity surgery results vary from patient to patient and depend on several factors. Two of the major benefits of Gastric Lap Band Obesity Surgery are 1)successful, safe, and effective weight loss and 2)freedom from many obesity-related health problems. Other benefits that are specific to gastric Lap Band® surgery includes: minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, stomach remains intact, no stomach stapling, normal intestinal function, adjustable gastric band, fully reversible procedure, relatively short recovery. Risks and complications of Lap Band obesity surgery may include: stomach wall deterioration, formation of ulcers, vomiting, heartburn, gas bloat, and difficulty in swallowing.

Like gastric bypass surgery, Lap Band® surgery reduces the size of the stomach and allows patients to feel full after consuming very little food. Bariatric surgeons generally prefer the Lap Band obesity surgery, as it involves less discomfort and a shorter recovery period.

Still, Lap Band obesity surgery, is not completely without risk even though it is considered the safest of surgeries for obesity. The device may require repair and time consuming additional minor operations, and weight loss is very dependent on longterm follow-up visits. Plus, certain foods may never be well tolerated by Lap Band® surgery patients.

The Main Causes Of Belly Fat - Poor Diet and Limited Exercise

Belly fat is a common problem in many countries. In America for example one in every three person is classified as obese. Obesity is a condition where an adult person is not able to maintain a balance between his calories intake and energy expenditure. Thus the person is said to be in an obese condition.

Obesity is spreading like epidemic and people are just ignorant about that obesity can take a toll on human life if not controlled.

Many medical people and health care professionals believe that diet and exercise are largely to blame. Many people eat poorly because many depend on fast foods for the daily sustenance. It is either because of their lifestyle or some simply like to dine outside. The menu items from most fast food outlets have many calories that put weight on the customers. Many people do not eat the healthy foods for great health. Some simply refuse to eat fruits and vegetables. These items are full of nutrition, but these items do not contain a lot of calories.

Lack of physical activity is one of the leading causes of obesity. Obesity is caused due to the imbalance in calories consumed and calories buried or utilized. Thus with no form of physical activity, obesity is bound to occur. The very fact that more and more people joining gyms, goes on to prove that people now have been aware of obesity. . Why More American's Are Getting Fatter by the Hour?

Obesity today is a disease that is spreading rapidly across the developed as well as developing nations beyond limits.

Obesity in medical terms may be defined as a condition of the body with the deposition of excessive amounts of fats. The most significant disadvantage of obesity is that it puts strain on joints and bones that have to sustain more weight than they are actually capable off, which leads to arthritis in the later stages of life. The excess weight also tends to make people inactive which further enhances the chances of gaining more weight.

The lack of physical activity and high cholesterol increases the chances of improper functioning of your heart and blood vessels, which may result in high blood pressure, cardiac arrest, and other heart related problems. Excess weight also leads to apnea, a type of cessation of breathing during sleep. Obesity can be cured with patience and effort and consulting with the physician.

Recognizing Obesity?

The theoretical definition of obesity is a body mass index of 30 or above. The body mass index is a measure of the weight determined according to the height, as developed and standardized by Belgian scientist Adolphe Quetelet in 1840. This index actually reflects the amount of fat stored on the body. The higher your (BMI) is, the worst is your susceptibility to certain diseases.

Physicians also warn that having a lot of fats in and around the waist region increases the risk of developing diseases. Going beyond the waist size of over 35 in women and over 40 in men implies that there are chances of complications in future and you need to consult with your doctor.

There is a natural weight loss pill that can help you in the fight against obesity. It is called Proactol and it is the latest trend in weight loss. Several well known stars have said that they are currently taking this pill to lose those nasty pounds that are stuck on there hips , legs, and thighs.

Causes and Treatment of Obesity

Many times we consume more calories from food than our body needs for physical activities. These unused calories are stored in the form of fat. You become obese when you keep this fat gathering continuously. Obesity is a long-term and complex disease and it is the result of many factors. The major factors for obesity are your activity level. If you are not engaged in any sort of activity and keep sitting or doing more mental work instead of physical work then there are more chances of obesity.

Nowadays obesity has become so common that not only young people as well as children are also suffering from this disease.

Causes

The main cause of obesity is over eating. Generally people do not know about the reasons of over eating. However, in many cases stress is also responsible for this. Try to lead a stress free life as much as possible.

Stress makes people feel hungry even when you have just taken food. Because of this people keep eating again and again. Hence, if you want to keep obesity away from yourself first of all work on the causes of stress.

Obesity is caused due to genetic or hereditary factors also. Research has shown that in many cases the major reason behind obesity is genetic. Children inherit obesity from their parents.

Childhood and Adolescent Obesity

Childhood obesity afflicts denizens across the social sphere. It is a problem for individuals of all racial, ethnic, educational, and socio-economic backgrounds. It has been estimated that half the United States’ adult population is overweight. Recently, it was calculated that about twenty percent of all American children are overweight. Obesity causes the growth pattern to accelerate to an unnatural extent; one of the side effects of this can be abnormal sexual development in boys and the early onset of menses. What’s more, obese children are a lot more likely to grow in to obese adults. They risk contracting such health problems and diseases as diabetes 2, gout, cancer, gallbladder disease, arthritis, digestion problems, respiratory disease, cardiovascular disease, and high blood pressure, among others.

What’s more, obese children suffer from the psychological and emotional consequences of being fat in a society that considers this image to be the opposite of ideal. Overweight children often have fewer friends, and more likely to be stigmatized in social situations. It has been found that children tend to associate obesity with negative characteristics such as laziness and greed. Obese children often suffer from depression and low self esteem.

While medical conditions and hormone imbalances are often blamed as causes for obesity, the fact remains that these conditions account for less than one percent of all childhood obesity cases. Nor can the problem be blamed completely on genetics, because oftentimes the problem has more to do with the family’s behavior when it comes to eating habits and exercise. Since obesity tends to be a disease that effects all members of the family – not just the child – the parents’ lifestyle must change also in order to instill healthy patterns in the child. A positive attitude towards overcoming obesity can lead to success.

Childhood Obesity - Treating It Is a Must

Number of children being victimized by obesity is on the ever rise, especially in the US. Childhood obesity is a consequence of interaction of psychological, physiological, nutritional, and familial factors. Did you know that it is a forerunner of obesity amongst the adults? Although it is not always that the obese children become obese adults but its early treatment is beneficial to counter its later consequences.

Wondering how can it be handled? Well, the ideal way is to have a support from your family. Parents often indulge into inculcating faulty food habits including too much of fast foods, chocolates amid others while pampering their children. As they say too much of anything isn’t good, these habits in the course of time can be a source for childhood obesity.

Family of an obese child is where he or she spends majority of the time. Thereby inculcating healthy dietary habits and behavioral modification induced by the parents could be a stepping stone towards a healthy lifestyle. For instance, switching over to whole-grain breads rather than whole-wheat breads can be healthy modification in the diet.

Even supportive measures by schools to initiate measures concerning to heath is advisable. After his family, the child spends the majority of his time in school, where his peers as well as teachers are a major source of influence. By encouraging physical workout, schools can lay foundation for a healthy life amongst children.

Appropriate medical help can also be reached for, to get a better idea of the approaches that can be adopted for tackling childhood obesity. Your general practitioner could help you diagnose about the factors that might be the factors working behind childhood obesity.

If not treated at an early stage, childhood obesity doesn’t only pave way for adult obesity but it also is a source for pediatric hypertension, stress on weight-bearing joints, besides the ridicule that they might have to deal with due their enormous size.

Obesity Letter

Obesity has reached a crisis level in this country, with obesity registering at 30 percent of the population. Gastric bypass surgery is generally considered to be the best surgical procedure for the treatment of morbid obesity. In fact, doctors are expected to perform 140,000 bariatric surgeries in 2005 alone.

As payers and practitioners in the medical community, we are well aware of these statistics and their impact on overall healthcare costs. And, until recently, not all insurance plans considered bariatric surgery as a medically necessary procedure. This is about to change. Federal healthcare authorities have changed obesity to be classified as an illness. This change often results in gastric bypass surgery being classified as a medical necessity for many overweight adults that meet the following criteria:

The patient’s body mass index (BMI) is over 40

The patient has failed one or more non-surgical, medically supervised weight loss programs

The patient has received a thorough psychological exam that confirms he or she is able and willing to conform to the dietary adjustments required by the surgery

Other medical conditions may also have to be considered; however, this change means you, as a payer, may be expected to provide coverage for cases that, in the past, would not have been covered.

Causes Of Child Obesity

Why is your child overweight? Have you done something wrong? What have they done that has caused this problem? We see overweight children all the time, but when it happens to your child then that is the time to put your concern into action.

In developed nations all over the world – particularly the United Kingdom and the United States – problems with obesity have become such a major issue that they are discussed widely on television, on the Internet, on the radio, and in everyday conversation. In addition to bad eating habits, one of the main problems that causes childhood obesity is societal and relates to the lack of physical activity in our day to day lives.

As the world becomes more complex, technology continues to make advances that encourage us to sit around all day doing little to nothing physically. Why bother when we have video games, computers, and televisions to entertain us? Why bother walking anywhere or riding a bike when we can simply get in a car or take public transportation? What it comes down to is a simple lack of movement in our day to day lives. Yet, even simple measures can help to relieve the burden of child obesity and to keep us all healthy.

It is difficult to calculate exact statistics behind childhood obesity as it relates to the consumption of fast food. What can be confirmed, however, is that changing trends in the way we eat have indeed contributed to the general obesity epidemic, particularly in children and young adults.
